I-CON 29 Major Guest Announcement

For nearly three decades, I-CON has been a first sign of the coming of spring, and the starting shot to the convention season in the NY/NJ/CT area. Long Island's annual I-CON remains the largest fan-run convention in the Northeast United States, and continues to run completely as a non-profit. This year, I-CON returns to the campus of SUNY Stony Brook after construction forced the show to another location in 2009. I-CON has hosted exciting media guests from blockbuster films and the hottest TV shows, but is unique for its ongoing commitment to literacy and scientific education and knowledge, above the usual admiration of science fiction as entertainment and pop culture. I-CON is the quintessential grass-roots sci-fi con.

Today Major Guests were announced for I-CON 29, which will take place from Friday, March 26, 2010 through Sunday, March 28, 2010. This year's guests come from all your favorite "Star" franchises, as well as some "-ica"'s, not to mention the real world.

Lucas Says Avatar May Bring 3D Star Wars Within Reach

George Lucas was prominently seated at a table right in front of the stage at last night's Golden Globes, despite having anything obvious in the running that would warrant such placement. Perhaps he was seated there for the sake of cutaways while James Cameron or Martin Scorsese waxed on about their work during their moments on stage. But on the after party circuit, Lucas seemed inspired by James Cameron's Avatar to renew his efforts to convert the Star Wars films to 3D for theatrical re-release.

Lucas told Access Hollywood "I liked it. (Avatar) I make movies like that, [so], I can appreciate what [James Cameron] went through to do it; [I’m] happy it’s so successful, and [it] worked very well in 3-D,” he continued. “Haven’t been a big fan of 3-D, but that movie definitely improves in 3-D.”

He went on to say, “We’ve been looking for years and years and years of trying to take ‘Star Wars’ and put it in 3-D. But, [the] technology hasn’t been there. We’ve been struggling with it, but I think this will be a new impetus to make that happen.”

So perhaps once Lucas is finishes his upcoming Tuskegee Airmen feature, “Red Tails,” we may get to see some movement towards a 3-D future for the Star Wars films.

G.I. Joe Sequel Moves Forward

We'll be seeing more of G.I. Joe at theaters. With G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra making over $300 million at the worldwide box office and the cast fully committed in advance for a sequel, there was never really any doubt that there'd be another installment to this film franchise. Paramount said back in August 2009, that the sequel would go into development, but has made no further announcements.

Collider.com is reporting that the writing team of last year's Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are writing the sequel to G.I. Joe. The pair has also been signed to write Deadpool for 20th Century Fox.

You can check out the initial report on Collider.

SDCC 2009 DK Announces LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary Mini-Figure Bonus

Row M is at SDCC and posting live from the LEGO Star Wars Visual Dictionary Panel, where DK publishing is giving an inside look and description of the upcoming DK book release, due out on 10/05/09.

The highly anticipated volume will give the ever-growing LEGO Star Wars universe the DK publishing Visual Dictionary treatment, with sets and mini-figs profiled from the point of view of within the Brick Universe, just like the Visual Dictionaries for the films do for the live-action universe. Star Wars LEGO celebrates it's tenth anniversary this year.

The book will be released with a new exclusive LEGO Star Wars mini-figure included. The panel is winding up, and we are about to find out what the mini-figure will be any moment now. Keep refreshing this page for the announcement any moment now!

(The way things are heading right now, my guess is that it is a prequel character. I base this on a corner of a vehicle brick I see in the stilled and cued up animation on video ready to roll on the screen in the room here)

UPDATE!: I was wrong. The new mini-fig is a ANH Yavin Award Ceremony Luke Skywalker (with the longer hair)

Row M is in San Diego with late word from the convention floor. Clear indications are that among the big Star Wars announcements this weekend will be the announcement of the next Star Wars Celebration.

Speculation about a possible "CV" (Celebration Five) has been building for months, as well as speculation about the host city and exact dates. Still no confirmation about anything relating to the highly anticipated live action TV series. But it looks like Celebration will be happening again very soon.

Check in often, as Row M brings you all the latest directly from SDCC.

Potter Cast to Honor Murdered Actor

Cast and crew of the new Harry Potter film will wear white ribbons on their wrists when attending the world premiere of the film as a tribute to Rob Knox, a young actor who appeared in the film, and was murdered last year.

Knox, who was 18, played seventh year Ravenclaw student Marcus Belby (a member of the prestigious Slug Club) in the film.

Shortly after completing filming last May, he was stabbed five times outside a bar in Sidcup, Kent. He was defending his younger brother when he was attacked by Karl Bishop, who is now serving four life sentences for the murder.

When the film premieres in London's Leicester Square, white ribbons will be worn in the late actor's memory.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry said, "I won't pretend I knew him incredibly well, or was his best friend on set, but I knew him and liked him, and what happened to him was obviously tragic and awful,".

Bonnie Wright, known for playing Ginny Weasley said, "It's going to be quite a traumatic experience for his family, who've been very supportive of him. Obviously tomorrow is going to be quite difficult, going to see him in the film. We wanted to wear as a mark of respect a white ribbon, not only for his life but for other families who have experienced this traumatic crime."

Rupert Grint and the H1N1 Virus

Rupert Grint, known as Ron Weasley from the "Harry Potter" films has already recovered from a bout with swine flu, just as reports of his illness are being confirmed. The 20-year-old actor did have to take some time off from filming on the seventh Harry Potter film, currently in production. But after a brief respite, he'll already be back in action, attending the full schedule of premieres and press junkets taking place in various countries this week. The rest of the cast has been tested and cleared of any infection.

"I did have swine flu, but it was just like any other flu I've had before," he said.

"It was just a sore throat and I was in bed for a while, but it was quite scary when I was first told I had swine flu because of what's been in the press."

"I was like 'am I going to die?', but it was fine - just a sore throat."

The sixth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, will have its world premiere in London's Leicester Square this Tuesday night.

Up Remains Tops at the B.O. as Land of the Lost Suffers from Tremendous Hangover

Disney and Pixar's animated feature, "Up" accomplished what is becoming more and more impossible each summer by staying number one at the box office for a second week. Dropping only 35% on its second weekend, the lowest figure for any summer movie this year, it just narrowly beat "The Hangover"'s $43.3 million to take the number one spot this weekend with $44.2 million. Its total domestic gross in 10 days is $137.3 million.

"Up"'s second number one may be mostly attributable to the surprisingly huge flop of Universal Pictures' big-budget "Land Of The Lost", which opened with an anemic $19.5 million. In 2008, "Speed Racer," the biggest flop of that summer, opened to a similar $18.5 million and went on to earn only $44 million in the U.S. and Canada. "Land of the Lost" seems to be following in those shallow footsteps.

"The Hangover"'s big opening was a please surprise for Warner Brothers. The R-rated comedy, was not a contender in the traditional sense for a mainstream summer movie, as it does not feature any name stars or draw on any established franchise. The film has been expected to open with only about half what it actually earned in its opening weekend.

SUCKADELIC 'Gets' Land Of The Lost, (Despite Will Ferrell)

With the potentially dreadful new "Land of the Lost" movie opening this weekend, the renowned Star Wars urban superartist and general pop-culture beacon, SUCKADELIC swoops in with his bootleg take on the Sleestaks that might have been and his generally spot-on rendering of the exact place that this beloved little slice of the late 20th century actually holds in our hearts. And he's mighty pissed at Will Ferrell on behalf of us all. Legendary for his Star Wars breakbeats of the 1990's, SUCKADELIC along with his always-brilliant current musical partnership "Band Of The Lost" and their video can be found by clicking through.

And be sure to check out his new Sleestak figures as they "Evolve" in a series of three, not unlike certain other action figures produced by some other giant corporation, based on some giant space opera.
